As the world’s most effective pollinators, bees are responsible for nearly one in three bites of food we eat. Their pollination services also help many of the world’s flowering plants to reproduce, supporting biodiversity and keeping our natural ecosystems healthy. But widespread pesticide use, habitat loss, climate change, and parasites threaten bee health and populations. The bottom line, the bees need our help. While there are many ways to help, good beekeeping is one of the most rewarding.

New to Beekeeping? Here’s what to do:

  1. Take a beekeeping course! Before you invest in purchasing living creatures, invest in learning proper care from a reputable source.

  2. Purchase beekeeping equipment. Check out our equipment list.

  3. Order your 5-frame Bee Nucs. Purchase early as quantities are limited.

  4. Pick up your bees. Pick-up is in Mondovi, WI, and is estimated to be the second week in May, weather permitting.

  5. Bring your new bees home and together you and the bees can help save the world.

  6. Reach out anytime. We will be here to answer any questions you have along the way.

  • In the fall, the bees are sent to California and return in the spring. In a perfect world, we would overwinter them, however, we have found shipping gives bees the best chance to survive winter. We work with a company that shares our values.

  • Many plants, including sorrel, lambs quarter, and rhubarb are grown around the apiary as they contain high amounts of oxalic acid which has been demonstrated to be effective against varroa destructor mites.

    Oxalic acid via vaporization is applied as needed. When applied correctly it is not harmful to bees or honey as it evaporates from the honey in 2 weeks and the honey regains its natural oxalic acid content.

  • A nuc is a partially developed colony. That means that they already have some food stores built up, but they don't have a proper home yet.

    Our bee nucs include:

    + 5 frames of drawn comb, eggs, brood, stored pollen and nectar.

    +workers and a laying, marked, Italian Carniolan queen.

  • Take 5 frames from the nuc box and place them into your hive box

    Add 5 empty frames and let them get to work

  • Bee nucs will be ready for pick up the second Saturday in May (5/13/2023) weather permitting. You will receive periodic updates via email regarding your nucs. If the pickup date needs to be changed, we will let you know as soon as possible.

The Bee Guy

Tommy has been beekeeping since 2011 and has sold nucs in collaboration with Bennett Valley Apiary since 2014.

At Dancing Yarrow, we mimic the conditions bees have in the wild. They have access to a wide range of pesticide-free forage from spring to fall, including healing herbs, mushrooms, wildflowers, and vegetables.

Strong, healthy, and thriving bees are Tommy’s top priority. His focus is providing high-quality nucs for fellow local beekeepers.
